Writers Guild Award Nominations Announced: The Shape of Water, Lady Bird, Logan Lead the Way

It was a big day for many screenwriters after the announcement of the 70th Annual Writers Guild Awards nominations. The list includes a few unexpected nominees, as well as a few surprise snubs.

Jordan Peele received his first nomination for Get Out, as did 89-year-old James Ivory for Call Me By Your Name. Greta Gerwig and Guillermo del Toro, both nominated for Best Screenplay at the Golden Globe Awards, received their first nominations, as well, for Lady Bird and The Shape of Water, respectively.

Aaron Sorkin received his fifth nomination for Molly’s Game, while Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber received their second for The Disaster Artist.

Perhaps one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises was Logan receiving a nomination. Director and co-writer James Mangold received his first nomination, sharing with multiple nominee Scott Frank and second-time nominee Michael Green. Some of the notable films not making the cut this year include Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, and Liz Hanna and Josh Singer’s The Post.

The screenplays for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Darkest Hour, Victoria and Abdul and Coco were not eligible for consideration by the WGA this year. The WGA, according to Variety, “excludes screenplays not produced under its jurisdiction or that of another guild as awards candidates, because it has the ultimate authority over determining which writers receive screenplay credit—if the script is produced under WGA jurisdiction.”

The winners will be announced on Feb. 11. See the full list of nominees below.
