X Japan to Make Their Coachella Debut in April

On Friday, it was announced that Japan’s best-selling rock group X Japan will be making their Coachella debut at this April’s festival. This will mark the return of X Japan’s creative leader and drummer Yoshiki—an emergency spinal surgery sidelined him for much of 2017 after the band headlined SSE Wembley Arena last March.

Their Coachella performance marks the group’s third U.S. performance after rocking the stage at Lollapalooza in 2010 and headlining Madison Square Garden in 2014.

As the most successful rock band in Japanese music, the band pioneered the Japanese rock movement “Visual-Kei.” This breaking with traditional Japanese pop music led to the group selling over 30 million records and selling out Japan’s famous Tokyo Dome a record 18 times. At the height of their popularity and success, the band broke up in 1997, only to reform ten years later.

Their 2016 documentary We Are X was released to critical acclaim, and received awards from Sundance and SXSW with an accompanying soundtrack that charted worldwide. Currently, the group is working on their first album in over 20 years, set for a 2018 release.

X Japan’s addition to a stellar Coachella lineup will once again make the festival one not to miss. See the band’s tour dates and a Paste Studio session with X Japan’s Yoshiki below.
