Exclusive: Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite Have “Found The One” on Sweet New Single

Grammy-winning collaborators Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite have combined forces once again on No Mercy in This Land, due out March 30 on ANTI- Records. Today, Paste is proud to debut the duo’s newest single from their new album, a swampy love song called “Found The One.” The track is the Valentine’s Day anthem you didn’t know you needed, highlighted by Harper’s heartfelt vocals and Musselwhite’s show-stealing harmonica.

“‘Found The One’ is a song about never giving up on finding true love,” Harper tells Paste. “It’s a song about surrendering to love, getting out of love’s way, and letting love do the heavy lifting.” The single is the second from the duo’s forthcoming sophomore album (following the recently released title track), which a press release describes as “a musical expression of the kinship between” veteran singer-songwriter Harper and blues virtuoso Musselwhite.

Harper recalled of the recording of “Found The One”:

It was also the one song written in the studio during the recording process of the record—Jason Mozersky started hammering out the main riff on guitar and Jimmy Paxson started coming up with this very unique drum pattern using his drum set along with, of all things, a metal trash can! So the two of them started making a wonderful racket and I immediately jumped out from behind the board. Right away, I knew we had to chase this idea down.

Harper and Musselwhite will make their new song’s worldwide television debut three weeks from today on Wednesday, March 7 when they take the stage on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

No Mercy in This Land is the first album from Harper and Musselwhite since 2013’s Get Up!, which earned the duo a Grammy for Best Blues Album. Paste premiered that album’s title track back in December of 2012. No Mercy in This Land also constitutes Harper’s first new music since 2016’s Call It What It Is, which he released with his band The Innocent Criminals.

Harper and Musselwhite will celebrate their new album’s March 30 release with a two-night stand at San Francisco’s storied Fillmore, kicking off an international tour that will take them across the U.K. and Europe before a return to the States in May. They’ll spend the summer touring North America—if there’s any mercy in this land, they’ll find it.

No Mercy in This Land is available for preorder here. Listen to “Found The One” exclusively via Paste below, and revisit a pair of ‘90s Harper and Musselwhite performances from the Paste Cloud while you’re at it. Further down, find the duo’s 2018 tour dates.
