Every 2018 Oscar-Nominated Film Based on a Book

From post-apocalyptic epics set in the future to heart-rending love stories in the Italian countryside, book-to-movie adaptations continue are a hit with film audiences. And the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues to be just as captivated as moviegoers by these tales.

In anticipation of the 90th Academy Awards ceremony on March 4th, we’ve assembled a list of every 2018 Oscar-nominated film based on a book. Adaptations earned nominations in 15 of the 24 award categories, including everything from Best Picture to Sound Mixing.

It’s worth noting, however, that only six of the 16 films on this list were adapted from books written by women. And of those six, only two of the screenplays—The Breadwinner and Mudbound—were written by women. The Breadwinner and Mudbound are also two of only three films boasting female directors on this list.

Hollywood  has miles to go in achieving gender parity, let alone nominating movies created by female filmmakers. This list shows that seeking out stories written by, adapted by and directed by women is crucial to making progress in this arena.
