There were two fascinating wide theatrical releases this weekend—and we’re not even counting Peter Rabbit!—but before we get into those, we have a long discussion about Netflix and what makes a movie a “movie” and, at last, the film that inspired that discussion, The Cloverfield Paradox.
Then we’re off to the two new releases, which couldn’t be any more different. First, it’s the final chapter of the bewilderingly odd and occasionally amusing Fifty Shades franchise, Fifty Shades Freed. Then, an even stranger movie: Clint Eastwood’s real-life heroes drama, 15:17 to Paris.
Also, a reboot! It’s the 1956 Elia Kazan-Tennessee Williams collaboration Baby Doll.
