Haley Heynderickx's Cathartic New Song Is "Worth It"

Haley Heynderickx continues to build towards her debut album I Need To Start A Garden, out on March 2 via Mama Bird Recording Co. Following singles “Oom Sha La La” and “Untitled God Song,” the Portland, Ore. singer-songwriter now shares eight-minute epic “Worth It.”

“Worth It” begins quietly as Heynderickx vocalizes over a tumble of soft electric guitar notes. “Everyone is ready for their outlier / everyone is ready for their call / Maybe I, maybe I’ve been selfish for these sounds,” she considers. Soon enough, the song is punched up into a rollicking, surf rock sort of number, rising and falling from there with Heynderickx’s vacillations. She looks at her own actions and characteristics like coins, eying the opposing sides of each: “Maybe I’ve maybe I’ve been selfish, or maybe I’ve maybe I’ve been selfless,” she sings. “Maybe I’ve maybe I’ve been worthless, or / maybe I’ve maybe I’ve been worth it.”

Heynderickx says of her sprawling, emotional new song:

I was living in a house with six women at the time and attempting to pursue music as more than a bedroom act. In this, I was struggling to find confidence and purpose in it. Writing “Worth it” was a cathartic release at the time, just allowing myself to take up space and make as much noise as I could in our basement without driving my roommates too crazy. After several weeks, this song got carved out. It has been through a lot and it means something new to me each time I hear it. (Unfortunately, not a Missy Elliot cover.)

Heynderickx shared “Untitled God Song” earlier this month, a lovely, imaginative tune in which she “grappled with the idea of what God looked like.” And back in fall, she released “Oom Sha La La,” an outstanding track that Paste’s Robert Ham wrote was uniquely emblematic of Heynderickx’s “understated grace and humor mixed with an abundance of spirit.”
