Michelle Wolf Is Launching a Netflix Talk Show

Our voracious appetite for talk shows will never be sated. Or maybe it will, now that Michelle Wolf is getting her own. The as-yet-untitled show will be a weekly half-hour on the Netflix service, and will premiere later in 2018.

“You can expect the types of jokes my former bosses would tell me we couldn’t do on TV,” Wolf says, in the (very details-light) press release emailed out by Netflix about ten minutes ago.

Wolf, of course, has worked for The Daily Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers and put out one of our favorite stand-up specials of 2017 on HBO. Perhaps it was losing out on one of the very few prominent stand-up specials of 2017 to not air on Netflix that drove them to lock Wolf down for a talk show? Who cares. That’s the kind of idle speculation that’s only worth engaging in if you’re trying to pad out a quick turnaround news post about a TV show that has revealed very few concrete details so far.

One promising bit of info in the press release, though: despite her Daily Show background this doesn’t seem to be another political comedy show. Nothing against John Oliver or Sam Bee or any of the other many, many, many comedians doing that kind of stuff, but as a site that’s been openly critical of just how much similar, familiar, sort of too safe and too lifeless political comedy is out there right now, it’s a little exciting to see a new talk show explicitly position itself outside that box. Here’s the direct quote on this, straight from the kindly Netflix people’s email: Wolf “will take a break from the seriousness of late night comedy. Instead of making the news fun, she’ll make fun of everything and everybody. There will be no preaching or political agenda…unless it’s funny.”

So hey, that’s all we know. There’ll be a weekly half-hour Michelle Wolf talk show on Netflix at some point in 2018. Coool.
