Denver-based Americana outfit Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have a new album on the way in Tearing At The Seams, due out on March 9 via Stax Records. Our latest taste of the octet’s second effort—and today’s Daily Dose—is “Hey Mama,” a heartfelt narrative strummer that takes the form of a conversation between Rateliff’s narrator and his aging mother.
The song’s lyric video is backed by dash-cam footage of a long drive down a snowy street, moving through the suburbs of the band’s native Denver and heading west into the city. Over twangy electric guitars and acoustic chords, Rateliff’s asks the advice of his tough-loving mother, who warns him against giving in to self-pity. “You better start acting like this here’s a race,” she urges, later adding, “You ain’t run far enough to say it ain’t gonna get any better.”
Today’s fortifying new tune follows lead Tearing At The Seams single “You Worry Me,” one of the most feel-good tracks released in 2018 thus far. Both singles have us looking forward to a satisfying sophomore effort from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats—a down-home salve for hard times. After all, a lot has changed since the band’s self-titled 2015 debut.
