Tiffany Haddish to Lead Tuca & Bertie, New Netflix Animated Series From BoJack Horseman Creators

Tiffany Haddish will lend her voice to Tuca, the character in Netflix’s new animated series Tuca & Bertie. The comedy comes to us from creator Lisa Hanawalt of BoJack Horseman, with Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack Horseman), Noel Bright (BoJack Horseman, Friends), Steven A. Cohen (BoJack Horseman, Jack & Bobby) and Haddish herself serving as executive producers.

The first season of Tuca & Bertie will consist of 10 episodes, and is currently without a premiere date. Netflix describes the series as “a comedy about the friendship between two 30-year-old bird women who live in the same apartment building: Tuca, a cocky, care-free toucan, and Bertie, an anxious, daydreaming songbird.” Bertie has not yet been cast, but Haddish sounds like a wonderful fit for Tuca. You can get a first glance at both characters below.

Haddish’s breakout came in the summer 2017 smash-hit comedy Girls Trip, before which she also starred in NBC’s The Carmichael Show. She will next appear in TBS comedy The Last O.G. (April 3) opposite Tracy Morgan and Universal Pictures comedy Night School (Sept. 28) alongside Kevin Hart. Haddish also penned a New York Times bestseller (essay collection The Last Black Unicorn) and released a Showtime stand-up special (She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood) last year, landing atop our list of 2017’s best comedians and generally having a massive year. She’s showing no signs of slowing down in 2018.

As is the case with BoJack, Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company will produce Tuca & Bertie, with Shadowmachine handling the animation. The series joins other animated Netflix originals BoJack, F Is for Family, Castlevania and Big Mouth—per THR, the streamer plans to continue to expand its slate of animated shows. We recently ranked BoJack as the very best Netflix original series, so Tuca & Bertie has some large horseshoes to fill. We look forward to seeing it soar.
