Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks Share Sunny New Single, "Middle America"

Stephen Malkmus  & The Jicks are back with their first new music in over four years. The Pavement frontman and his band have shared a new single titled “Middle America” and announced a summer tour of North America.

Much like “Range Life” off Pavement’s classic Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (which we named one of the band’s best songs in 2016), “Middle America” is a folksy, sunny number in which Malkmus poses deep existential questions amid warm acoustic chords, freewheeling electric riffs, and barebones drums and bass. “Men are scum, I won’t deny,” he sings, “May you be shitfaced the day you die.” Here, here.

Malkmus and company have set a 31-date North American tour, starting June 1 in St. Paul, Minn. The band’s run will take them all across the U.S., with stops in Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., Nashville, San Francisco and Seattle, among other cities, plus Canada shows in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The tour concludes with an Aug. 5 show in Portland, Ore.

Today’s single arrives without any information on a new Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks album, aside from the promise of “a further taste of new music,” so stay tuned to find out how “Middle America” fits into the band’s bigger picture. Their most recent release is 2014’s Wig Out at Jagbags.
