On one of the chilly, gray days that’s become Counterpart’s trademark, Ian (Nicholas Pinnock) promises Emily (Olivia Williams), “You can always trust me… I would always listen” in this exclusive clip from the first part of the Starz sci-fi/spy drama’s Season One finale, “No Man’s Land.”

As we’ve covered extensively here at Paste, from the series’ twisty premise and connections to the new Cold War to the episode in which it leapt from good to great, Counterpart is not easily synopsized, and Emily’s nonspecific thanks don’t add much clarity. (Nor, for that matter, does the network’s description of the episode: “Howard attempts to thwart the Guest’s plans. Howard and Emily chase Kaspar.”)

What does stand out is the usually undemonstrative Emily reaching for Ian’s gloved hand, and the light kiss she plants there. Whether anyone is truly worthy of trust in the warped world of Counterpart? Now that’s another matter.

Counterpart airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Starz.
