Kansas City singer-songwriter Samantha Fish has revealed a new video for “Blood in the Water,” taken from her 2017 LP Belle of the West.
Belle of the West is Fish’s fifth studio album and was released late last year via Ruf Records. It was her second album of 2017, as it followed Chills & Fever. Belle of the West is described in a press release as a “deeply soulful, personally charged 11-song set showcasing Fish’s sublime acoustic guitar skills as well as her rootsy, emotionally resonant songwriting.”
One of the singles from the album, “Blood in the Water” demonstrates Fish’s love of traditional Americana songwriting with violins and bluesy vocals, and the song’s new video, directed by Keith Hoffmann, juxtaposes Fish’s sweet, tantalizing vocals with a dark visual narrative. Fish tells Paste of the inspiration behind the song and video:
I wrote “Blood in the Water” about a suicide of someone I was close to and the fall-out of something so tragic. I was writing about the feelings that come when you are bracing for the worst, the experience of it, and life moving forward after. The main character in the video is running, he’s haunted by the ones that he’s lost. In the end he’s really alone but still running from the guilt that he has created within himself.
Fish described Belle of the West as an evolution from her previous work, with storytelling as the heart of the songwriting and Mississippi blues as the heart of the music:
To me, this is a natural progression. It’s a storytelling record by a girl who grew up in the Midwest. It’s a personal album. I really focused on the songwriting and the vocals and the melodies and the emotion, and on bringing another dimension to what I do. I wasn’t interested in shredding on guitar, although we did end up doing a few heavier things. I love the Mississippi style of the blues; there’s something very soulful and very real about that style of music, so this was a chance to immerse myself in that.
Fish will embark on a North American tour in support of her latest album, beginning in Baton Rouge in April and ending in Edmonton in August. You’ll find ticket info on Fish’s site here.
