Marvel Lands Coming to Disneyland Resort and Disney Parks Around the World

Today Disney confirmed what has long been rumored: It’ll be building a new area themed to Marvel superheroes at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim. That’s the second park at Disneyland Resort, right across the esplanade from the original Disneyland. The new area will be taking over the space currently occupied by A Bug’s Land, a short sliver of ground that features a few kid-friendly carnival rides themed to A Bug’s Life. The new area will also connect to Guardians of the Galaxy—Mission: Breakout!, the recent Marvel-themed ride that took over the old Tower of Terror in California Adventure’s Hollywood Land area. No real specifics have been announced yet, but the Disney Parks blog notes that “the Guardians of the Galaxy will be joined by Spider-Man and the Avengers in what will become a completely immersive Super Hero universe.” The post also states that the new Marvel area “will begin recruiting guests in 2020,” so it seems like Anaheim will have another notable expansion opening a year after the massive Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at Disneyland. It looks like we can maybe expect rides based on Spider-Man and the Avengers. A Captain America roller coaster has long been rumored to be a possibility for California Adventure; is that still in the cards or have plans changed? We’ll know more whenever Disney announces it.

The Disney Parks blog post also mentioned the already announced Marvel offerings coming to Disney parks around the world. That includes a new Iron Man ride at Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris, in what used to be France’s version of the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster with Aerosmith. And as previously announced, Hong Kong Disneyland, which already has an Iron Man ride in what used to be Star Tours, will be getting a ride themed to Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Epcot at Walt Disney World in Florida is also scheduled to get its own Marvel presence with a roller coaster based on Guardians of the Galaxy opening within the next few years. Due to legal issues with Universal Studios, though, who owns the theme park rights to most major Marvel characters in the East, Disney will have a hard time rolling out more Marvel attractions at Disney World. If you’re a Marvel fan who’s excited for what Disney’s Imagineers can do with those characters, you’ll have to make way to California, France or Hong Kong to experience it.

The Parks blog also released a short video and three great posters for the different parks getting Marvel attractions. Check ‘em out below, and read the full Disney Parks blog post here.
