Saturday Night Live
alum Sasheer Zamata will star in Everything, Everything director Stella Meghie’s next film, titled The Weekend, per Deadline.
Zamata will star as a comedian who gets involved in a complicated romantic situation as she goes on a trip with her ex-boyfriend, his new woman and a mystery guest. Zamata is joined by fellow comedian Tone Bell (Disjointed), DeWanda Wise (She’s Gotta Have It, Captain Marvel), Kym Whitley (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Y’lan Noel (Insecure) in the other key roles.
Along with directing the film, Meghie wrote the screenplay and will produce the project with Marada Pictures’ Sarah Lazow and James Gibb, and Homegrown Picture’s Stephanie Allain and Mel Jones. Josh Bachove will serve as a co-producer.
Meghie’s latest project comes after the success of last year’s Everything, Everything, along with the TV film Jean of the Joneses. Zamata’s low-key departure from SNL has led to amazing opportunities, such as her first stand-up special. Between Meghie’s amazing directing and writing skills, and Zamata’s awkward-black-girl humor, this film is shaping up to be a must-see.
