Bob Dylan, St. Vincent, Ben Gibbard, More Appear on LGBTQ Wedding Song Compilation

MGM Resorts International has partnered with Legacy Recordings for the release of Universal Love, a new compilation featuring wedding songs for the LGBTQ community.

The six-track compilation boasts appearances from Bob Dylan, St. Vincent, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, Kesha, Kele Okereke of Bloc Party and Valerie June. The songs on the compilation flip the genders, as Dylan re-recorded the 1929 track “She’s Funny That Way” as “He’s Funny That Way” and Kesha recorded a cover of Janis Joplin’s “I Need a Man to Love Me” as “I Need a Woman to Love Me.”

Indeed, all the songs feature the opposite pronouns of the original songs. Gibbard covered The Beatles’ “And I Love Her,” St. Vincent covered The Crystals’ “And Then He Kissed Me,” Okereke covered The Temptations’ “My Girl” and June covered the 1932 standard “Mad About The Boy.”

According to a press release, over a decade before same-sex marriage was legalized, same-sex commitment ceremonies were performed at chapels at MGM Resorts’ properties and this new compilation is a celebration of love and inclusiveness in that same spirit.
