<i>Hereditary</i>'s New Trailer Will Leave You Speechless

There are horror films and there are unsettling films; then there are deeply terrifying and disturbing films. If Tuesday’s new trailer for Hereditary falls into the latter category, then this film must be part of a whole new level of horror.

A24’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Witch were both unsettling, but not necessarily terrifying. A24’s Spring Breakers and Under the Skin were both a little disturbing, but not horrific. From the first Hereditary trailer to today’s new one, plus the stellar reviews from its premiere at Sundance, it looks like A24 has really outdone itself with Hereditary.

The film stars Toni Collette as Ellen, the daughter of the matriarch of the family and mother to two children. After the passing of the matriarch, the family begins to uncover cryptic and disturbing secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover about their family’s past, the more they try to run away from the evil fate that plagues the family.

The official A24 description describes first-time feature writer-director Ari Aster’s film as “a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.”

If that doesn’t scare you enough, during a screening of the film at SXSW, creepy packages containing disturbing little items were sent to each person who attended the screening. Talk about taking film promotion to a new level.

Collette’s performance—our top turn of Sundance 2018—has sparked some early Oscar buzz for next year’s Best Actress race, so see for yourself if the long Oscar-snubbed horror genre can finally pull some awards recognition.

Hereditary arrives in theaters on June 8. See the new trailer (plus a recent poster for the film) below and revisit the first one here.
