Memphis singer-songwriter Julien Baker covered The Mountain Goats’ “No Children” at a show last night in Massachusetts. Baker covered the song as an intro to her own track, “Blacktop,” taken from her 2015 album Sprained Ankle.
“No Children” is from The Mountain Goats’ 2002 album Tallahassee and the band apparently saw the footage of Baker’s cover, because John Darnielle tweeted that it was “the best version of “No Children” [he’s] ever heard.”
Baker also recently teamed up with Manchester Orchestra to cover Pedro the Lion’s “Bad Things To Such Good People,” which you can listen to here. Baker is currently on a U.S. headlining tour after supporting Belle and Sebastian. She continues to promote her latest album Turn Out The Lights, which Paste named on our list of the 50 best albums of 2017. In Paste’s review of Baker’s Turn Out The Lights, Ben Salmon wrote:
One of Baker’s great gifts as a songwriter is her relatability. She communicates pain and confusion in plain terms, sprinkling in self-destructive fantasies, questions for God, internal monologue, desperate pleading and other common devices, delivering it all through a voice that simmers with emotion. Baker doesn’t just make you feel, she makes it feel real. Very, very real.
