Cleveland-native rapper Kid Cudi is no stranger to sampling rock music. In the past, he’s used samples of songs by a wide range of indie artists, including St. Vincent, MGMT, Haim and Father John Misty.
Now, the artist has repurposed the chorus from Smashing Pumpkins’ alt-rock staple, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” in his new song “The Rage.” The song is featured in the new Dwayne Johnson-lead videogame film, Rampage, in theaters today, Friday, April 13.
With the harsh vocals of Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, “The Rage” is a haunting tune that features Kid Cudi crooning his ominous lyrics, slowly building to Corgan belting his iconic chorus: “Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage.” The result is an example of classic Cudi, sounding like something coming straight off Man on the Moon.
Rampage, directed by Brad Peyton and based on the 1980s arcade game classic, Rampage stars Johnson as primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who shares a unique bond with an albino gorilla named George. You can watch the movie’s trailer here.
Earlier in the year, Smashing Pumpkins announced their return to music in the form of the “Shiny And Oh So Bright” reunion tour, with a new album hinted at later this year. Despite Corgan’s band returning with its original drummer and lead guitarist, bassist D’arcy Wretzky, was not invited. Find out more here.
