Thundercat Unveils Smooth New Psych-Funk Single for Adult Swim, "Final Fight"

Los Angeles bassist and singer-songwriter Thundercat (aka Stephen Bruner) has released a new track, “Final Fight,” as the 54th installment of the Adult Swim Singles Program.

“Final Fight” shows Bruner’s diverse musical range as it incorporates a wide range of genres: jazz, R&B, soul, funk, psych and experimental pop. The smooth psych-funk single features his luscious, layered vocals that reach for the high notes with ease, funky wah-wah electric guitar hooks, idiosyncratic synths and oddball percussion.

This new single is Thundercat’s first original track since his 2017 critically acclaimed third full-length Drunk, which featured Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. Paste contributor Mack Hayden wrote of the album in a quite complimentary review:

It takes a special kind of artist to create a sound both familiar and groundbreaking. Thundercat continues his upward trajectory in that regard here. This is easy going soft rock for those who love the Footloose soundtrack and it could pass purity tests for the most uptight, pretentious hipster. You can call Drunk yacht rock but only if the yacht in question can fly straight to the Andromeda Galaxy.

Since his latest album’s release, Thundercat has bcome a bit of a breakout star as he made appearances at Coachella and Glastonbury Festival, and performed on late-night TV shows like The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Thundercat is set to play some U.S. dates and major European festivals soon, as well as his first South American tour. Listen to “Final Fight” and check out his upcoming tour dates below.
