Young Fathers Share Authoritarian-Themed Video for “Toy”

Scottish alternative hip-hop trio Young Fathers have revealed a new video for “Toy,” taken from their new album Cocoa Sugar, released earlier this year.
“Toy” joins their previous singles “In My View” and “Lord” in getting the visual treatment. The band’s latest video, directed by Salomon Ligthelm, is a spoof of the power-hungry dictators who run the world today. World leaders from the U.S., Russia, North Korea and other nations are depicted, but as young, spoiled children who pound their fists on their desks and give orders to their adult military generals.
Vocalist Alloysious Massaquoi’s vocals ferociously spit the words, “You’re just a broken little toy / a silly little boy,” and you can’t help but think of these lyrics in the video’s new context, which makes a mockery of the authoritarian-leaning world leaders.
Released in March, Cocoa Sugar is the band’s first new album since 2015’s acclaimed White Men Are Black Men Too. Young Fathers also famously won the esteemed Mercury Prize for their 2014 debut album Dead.
The band will perform a handful of U.S. shows, including a show in Brooklyn, and a big support slot for LCD Soundsystem and Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Hollywood Bowl.
