Assassin's Creed Odyssey Looks to Have Leaked via the Unlikeliest Source: A Keychain

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey may very well be the next entry in Ubisoft’s ever-popular sneaky, stabby franchise. French videogames website JeuxVideoLive posted an image of a branded keychain bearing the name of this still-unannounced title. A savvy Google Translate user in the ResetEra forums translated the text from French to English and JeuxVideoLive’s source, an insider codenamed Arcticblue, says that the title is a direct follow-up to the adventures of Bayek from Assassin’s Creed Origins. As of yet, of course, nothing is official.

Jason Schreier of Kotaku confirms JeuxVideoLive’s report, noting that the game is set in Ancient Greece, features the choice of a male or female character, and even has RPG-like dialogue choices. Nothing is said of it being a direct follow-up to Assassin’s Creed Origins, however. The game will likely be shown at E3 and released this fall—thus, quelling the other rumor that the franchise isn’t a yearly product after taking 2016 off in the wake of the failure of Assassin’s Creed Unity, as well as Assassin’s Creed Syndicate not selling as well as previous entries in the series.

Given the story of Assassin’s Creed Origins, it is likely that if Bayek—the protagonist from Origins—is not the protagonist of Odyssey, he will likely be involved in the story in some way. With all of this still being relatively speculative, one can only hope that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, if real, will embrace the Odyssey part of its title. Just imagine an Assassin’s Creed videogame set in the confines of Homer’s great epic, The Odyssey. The Assassin’s Creed series constantly flirts with mysticism and fantasy, so why not fully embrace it?

E3 is only two weeks away, where the Ubisoft conference will probably shed more light on this leak, and given that Assassin’s Creed seems to leak year in and year out, the existence of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a relatively safe bet, though it is hilarious that Ubisoft, a monolithic entity in the world of videogames, could be foiled by a branded keychain that will probably be just another item sitting next to the cash register at your local videogame retail store.
