Elvis Presley's Love of Gospel Music Inspires New Album, Where No One Stands Alone

Elvis Presley’s love for gospel music is being celebrated through a new album, set for release on Aug. 10 via RCA/Legacy Recordings. Where No One Stands Alone features 14 original performances of gospel songs, ranging from the traditional “Amazing Grace” to “Crying In The Chapel”—Presley’s 1965 version of the latter track became well-known and successful, breaking into the top five of Billboard’s Hot 100.

“Since I was two years old, all I knew was gospel music,” Presley once said. “It became such a part of my life, it was as natural as dancing. A way to escape my problems, and my way of release.”

The record will incorporate newly recorded instrumentation, as well as backing vocals from some of the artists Presley performed with onstage and in the studio. Among these artists are Cissy Houston—mother of Whitney Houston and a soul singer in her own right, she performed in The Sweet Inspirations and sang with Elvis on-stage beginning in 1969—and members of Presley’s longtime backup group, The Stamps, including Donnie Sumner, Bill Baize, Ed Hill and Larry Strickland.

On the album’s title track, Lisa Marie Presley duets with her father, who she said in her album notes was most passionate and at peace while singing gospel music.

“It was a very powerful and moving experience to sing with my father,” Lisa Marie wrote in her notes for the album. “The lyrics speak to me and touch my soul. I’m certain that the lyrics spoke to my father in much the same way.”

A special Where No One Stands Alone event will be held at the Graceland Soundstage on Aug. 11 as part of Elvis Week 2018—Lisa Marie Presley will participate. You can find tickets for the event here.
