Game of Thrones Prequel Given Pilot Order at HBO

Last summer, HBO announced it was developing five potential spinoffs of Game of Thrones, the first of which has just been given the green light to film a pilot.

Created by Kick-Ass and Kingsman writer Jane Goldman, and A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin, the prequel reportedly takes place thousands of years before the events of the fantasy series we know and love. The prequel is said to chronicle “the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” Goldman wrote the screenplay for the pilot and will serve as showrunner as well as executive producer alongside Martin.

While Goldman’s script is the first to get a pilot, there are still four other concepts out there from Max Borenstein, Brian Helgeland, Carly Wray and Bryan Cogman that have not yet been ruled out.

The final season of GoT is set to arrive in 2019, any potential spinoff will have to wait at least a year after the final episode to premiere on HBO, according to their president of programming, who told Deadline in January that he did not want to use the finale of GoT to launch anything else: “I want it to stand alone as the finale to the greatest TV show of all time.”
