Willem Dafoe Cast in Netflix's The Last Thing He Wanted

Willem Dafoe has signed on to star in Netflix’s adaptation of Joan Didion’s The Last Thing He Wanted, per Variety.

The film is being co-written and directed by Dee Rees, in her second collaboration with the streaming service, following 2017’s critically acclaimed Mudbound.

Dafoe’s career spans three Academy Award nominations and nearly four decades. He last appeared in his Oscar-nominated performance in Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, as well as in 2017’s less-than-stellar Murder on the Orient Express. He was recently cast opposite Robert Pattinson in A24’s The Lighthouse.

The Last Thing He Wanted tells the story of Washington Post journalist Elena McMahon, who abandons her job to care for her ailing father, only to become embroiled in his secret life as a U.S. government arms dealer in Central America, just as the Iran-Contra crisis reaches its tipping point. Oscar winner Anne Hathaway has been cast as McMahon.

Previously, Dafoe collaborated with Netflix for the 2017 film Death Note with Lakeith Stanfield.

Dafoe can next be seen opposite Jason Momoa and Amber Heard in Aquaman, due out Dec. 21. Check back for further updates on The Last Thing He Wanted.
