Daily Dose: Thin Lips, “Gaslight Anthem (The Song Not The Band)”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Philly indie-punk outfit Thin Lips know how to deliver an irresistible punch. If their recent release, “A Song For Those Who Miss You All The Time,” was the first taste of this, then Monday’s new single, “Gaslight Anthem (The Song Not The Band),” is the hard proof.

As part of their forthcoming album Chosen Family, “Gaslight” sees Thin Lips bringing their queer realities and fearless energy to the fore of pop-punk, a representation which makes the song’s themes—inner demons and lost love—all the more poignant. Electric riffs pulse underway as Chrissy Tashjian brandishes a sharp hook: “Squint my eyes / It’s hard to see / Beneath my skin / It’s haunting me,” she sings, wrestling with her own thoughts. Crashing over spacious drums and rolling guitars, Tashjian’s vocals carry this heavy weight throughout the track, diffused into an anthemic call with the help of backing vocals by Hop Along’s Frances Quinlan, Brendan Lukens of Modern Baseball, and Zoe Reynolds (aka Kississippi.)

Take a listen to the track below, along with the band’s recently released single “A Song For Those Who Miss You All The Time,” and find out where to catch Thin Lips live with Hop Along, Japandroids, and Slaughter Beach, Dog this summer and fall further down. Chosen Family is due out July 27 via Lame-O Records and is available for physical and digital preorder now.
