Over the weekend, Snail Mail’s summer tour reached the Union Transfer in Philadelphia, Pa. As Brooklyn Vegan first pointed out, during the show, Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield stepped onstage with Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan for a cover of Sheryl Crow’s “Strong Enough,” off her 1993 record Tuesday Night Music Club—an album just a few years younger than Crutchfield and a few years older than Jordan.
“This is for all the heteros, thank you,” Jordan, who is openly gay, said, dedicating the song. The recurring lyric, “Are you strong enough to be my man,” rolled in as the answer to the stage banter. Playing an acoustic rendition of the Crow hit, Jordan accompanied their harmonizing vocals with acoustic guitar. The simple arrangement allowed the voices of the leading indie singers to dazzle, with Crutchfield’s voice cutting through clearly and Jordan’s slightly wispier waver adding movement.
Snail Mail’s tour in support of their acclaimed debut album Lush continues in North America through the end of July before heading abroad in August.
