Gravity Falls Creator Alex Hirsch Signs Overall Deal with Netflix

Fans of the cult favorite Gravity Falls can find more of creator Alex Hirsch’s work soon at Netflix, where he’s signed a multi-year, overall deal to exclusively develop new series and features for the service’s adult animation slate.

The new deal will shift Hirsch from children’s to adult animation, adding to Netflix’s push into original animation with series like BoJack Horseman and Matt Groenig’s Disenchantment.

Gravity Falls ran for two seasons on Disney Channel and later, Disney XD, where it picked up BAFTA and Annie Awards, and amassed a loyal following of fans both young and old along the way. Adult fans were drawn to the show’s sophisticated sense of humor and character development, rare in children’s animation, as Paste’s Zach Blumenfeld eulogized after the series ended in 2016.

“Alex is an imaginative storyteller with new ideas who’s quickly developed a reputation as a fresh new voice in animation,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content for Netflix, in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to work with him as we continue expanding our adult animated slate.”

Hirsch also joked about joining the streaming giant’s rapidly expanding roster.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join the amazing roster of talent coming to Netflix,” said Hirsch. “Plus it couldn’t hurt to be on The Algorithm’s good side before The Singularity hits. Awesome things are coming!”

While Gravity Falls isn’t and, as a Disney property, likely won’t be available to stream on Netflix, fans should keep their eye out on Hirsch’s next moves there.
