Lala Lala Debut New Single "Water Over Sex," Surreal Stop-Motion Music Video

Chicago indie slack rockers Lala Lala debuted their new single “Water Over Sex” on Tuesday, along with an accompanying stop-motion animated video. The track is off their forthcoming sophomore album The Lamb, out Sept. 28 through Hardly Art.

The song is a woozy end-of-summer jam, driven by flanged guitar lines and singer Lillie West’s hazy, submerged vocals. The song is thick with that feeling of being submerged, or perhaps teetering on the edge of being overwhelmed. “You think I’m good, well I’m soil in a sifter,” West sings. “A stone won’t fall through, it just keeps getting thicker.”

The surreal music video, featuring stop-motion animation by co-directors Matthew James-Wilson and Ginette Lapalme, reflects the feeling of being overwhelmed. It features a rabbit figurine lounging on the beach, covering its face, intercut with illustrated clips of West singing and kaleidoscopic close-ups of water.

West says the song, and the band’s forthcoming album as a whole, came out of a dark period in her life. “The Lamb was written during a time of intense paranoia after a home invasion, deaths of loved ones and general violence around me and my friends,” West said in a statement. “I started to frequently and vividly imagine the end of the world, often becoming too frightened to leave my house.”

Lala Lala kicked off an extensive North American tour on Aug. 8 at Chicago’s House of Vans, and will continue to play shows through mid-October with Wolf Parade, LVL UP, WHY? and Mothers. See below for a full itinerary.
