New on Amazon Prime Video: All the Movies and TV Coming in September

Summer is all too rapidly coming to a close, but with the changing of the leaves also comes a changing of the Amazon Prime Video library. The streaming service is adding some feature films and television shows that will take some of the sting out of the onset of gloomier weather. Read on for a handful of the highlights and keep right on scrolling for the full list.

Amazon’s slate requires that we start in the movie department, where next month’s most enticing titles live. Topping the heap is Paul Thomas Anderson’s brilliant turn-of-the-century drama There Will Be Blood, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as ruthless and misanthropic oil baron Daniel Plainview. The 2007 film, arriving on Amazon Sept. 1, won Oscars for both Day-Lewis’ towering performance and Robert Elswit’s cinematography, receiving nominations in six other categories, and back in 2009, we at Paste listed it among the best films of the decade. (Perhaps most notably, it produced the unforgettable phrase, “I drink your milkshake!”) Other highlights incoming on the first of the month include the first two Ghostbusters films (1984, 1989), classic crime drama Chinatown, Cameron Crowe career highlight Jerry Maguire, Oscar-winning hip-hop drama Hustle & Flow, Michael Mann’s 2006 Miami Vice adaptation, beloved ‘90s rom-com Sleepless in Seattle, Burt Reynolds/Sally Field-starring action-comedy Smokey and the Bandit and, speaking of Reynolds, 1974’s original The Longest Yard. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to catch 2018 CIA thriller Beirut (Sept. 4), Saoirse Ronan-starring Ian McEwan adaptation On Chesil Beach (Sept. 15), 2008 Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy Baby Mama (Sept. 16), Robert De Niro-directed potboiler The Good Shepherd (Sept. 16) and Timothee Chalamet-starring coming-of-age thriller Hot Summer Nights (Sept. 22).

As for the small screen, Amazon has a number of original series on the way, including the debut seasons of two particularly promising shows: A new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classical tragedy King Lear, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as the eponymous ruler (premiere date TBD), and Forever, a comedy created by Emmy Award-winning writers Alan Yang (Master of None) and Matt Hubbard (Parks & Recreation) that stars Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph as a comfortably numb married couple who decide to shake things up (Sept. 14). Other incoming originals comprise: the first season of Six Dreams (Sept. 7), a behind-the-scenes look at LaLiga, Spain’s top football league; season 2B of Wishenpoof (Sept. 7), a children’s series chronicling the life of Bianca and her magical power of making wishes come true; and season 1A of Pete the Cat, a children’s series based on the New York Times bestsellers about exploring your world and trying new things while being smart, accepting and optimistic. That’s hardly all: Licensed offerings coming to Amazon’s TV library include season one of sketch-comedy series The Kevin Bishop Show, seasons one and two, respectively, of BBC dramas The Broker’s Man and The Field of Blood, and season one of FX’s J. Paul Getty III kidnapping limited series Trust.
