New on Netflix: All the Movies and TV Coming in September

Take it from us, the people who regularly catalog the incoming (and outgoing) slates of various streaming services: Netflix has an insane amount of September programming to be excited about. Seriously, any number of their inbound films or TV shows on this list could claim the title of our most-anticipated—that designation changed hands at least half a dozen times while we were first reading it over. There’s that much good stuff on the way.

As a result, picking a title to lead off with was a struggle, but who else but the king could prevail? We refer, of course, to King T’Challa, aka the Black Panther, aka the protagonist of one of the most successful films of all time: Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. Unless you’ve been living under the Rock of Gibraltar, you’ve heard about this thing: It’s grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, it’s the most tweeted-about film ever made, it’s in the Smithsonian ... oh, and it’s very good! In fact, it’s one of Paste top films of the year. All of this to say that, if you still haven’t seen the Ryan Coogler-helmed blockbuster, which stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett and many more, you can finally right that wrong via Netflix come Sept. 4. Beyond Wakanda, there are plenty more movies to get amped up about, many of which we won’t have to wait long for: beloved Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day, Jack Black-led luchador farce Nacho Libre, epic monster movie classic King Kong (presumably Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning ‘05 version), Brian DePalma’s iconic ‘80s gangster flick Scarface, classic high-school dramedy The Breakfast Club and early-2000s Douglas Adams adaptation The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy all debut on Sept. 1. Following later in the month are a pair of delightful Disney films in Lilo & Stitch and The Emperor’s New Groove (Sept. 2), Shannon Purser-starring (aka Barb of Stranger Things fame) Netflix original Sierra Burgess Is A Loser (Sept. 7), Edgar Wright’s quick and clever action-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Sept. 16), Robert Eggers’ downright chilling directorial debut The Witch (Sept. 17), another Disney blockbuster duo in A Wrinkle in Time and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Sept. 25), and last but by no means least, Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier’s fourth film, Hold the Dark (Sept. 28). Not a bad month for movies!

Netflix’s TV slate for September is no less drool-inducing, primarily by virtue of the impending premiere of BoJack Horseman’s fifth season. We at Paste consider that particular program to be Netflix’s very best original series, not to mention the service’s best animated show, so you can imagine our excitement vis-à-vis the return of “the sad horse show.” BoJack is back on Sept. 14, as is another acclaimed Netflix original in American Vandal, a “true crime” mockumentary series that appears to be moving in a radical new direction in its forthcoming second season. That’s just the beginning of September’s noteworthy small-screen additions, which also include the debut of Cary Fukunaga’s psychological-drama limited series Maniac (Sept. 21), the sophomore seasons of Atypical and Marvel’s Iron Fist (both on Sept. 7), Norm Macdonald’s show Norm Macdonald Has a Show (Sept. 14), Tony Danza/Josh Groban-starring father-son comedy (yes, you read that right) The Good Cop (Sept. 21), season three of Spanish period drama Cable Girls (Sept. 7), the fifth installment of delicious docuseries Chef’s Table (Sept. 28) and season eight of AMC’s juggernaut zombie drama The Walking Dead (Sept. 23). Don’t sleep on Netflix’s incoming comedy offerings, either: Both Daniel Sloss and D.L. Hughley have new stand-up specials on the way, with Live Shows and Contrarian streaming starting on Sept. 11 and 18, respectively.

Ridiculously good September slate, right? Well, after the night out comes the hangover, and after Netflix’s incoming titles come the outgoing. Let’s rip this band-aid right off: There’s a bunch of good entertainment on its way out. Movies leaving Netflix on the first of next month include (but are not limited to) Batman Begins, Casino, Dead Poets Society, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Ghostbusters, Man on Wire and The Dark Knight, while later in the month we lose Disney’s Pete’s Dragon (Sept. 14), Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (Sept. 15), Moonrise Kingdom (Sept. 16), Iris (Sept. 24) and The Imitation Game (Sept. 28). Those losses sting, but if you need something to assuage the pain, simply scroll back up and reread those first couple of paragraphs, thereby returning to a time before you knew that Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead’s Netflix streaming days are numbered.
