Florence + The Machine debuted two tracks this morning, a re-imagined “Hunger” and a cover of Tori Amos’ “Cornflake Girl,” released as Spotify Singles.
The singles, recorded at RAK Studios in London, follow the release of the band’s fourth studio album, High as Hope, back in July of this year. You can check out Paste’s review of the album here.
“Hunger,” the lead single from High as Hope, received a slightly simplified rework in the session while still maintaining its driving rhythm and high energy. In contrast, the “Cornflake Girl” cover lives in an entirely different realm than the original, managing to keep the funky feel of the Amos version while stripping away much of the ‘90s cheese factor. Florence Welch’s chilly vocals bring an air of drama that ups the urgency of the track, brining an intensity not found in the original—Amos herself described the rendition as “powerful.”
