Jonah Hill Shares Mid90s Spotify Playlist

Jonah Hill is taking a decidedly modern approach for the soundtrack to ‘90s L.A. skater nostalgia piece Mid90s, his directorial debut, coming to theaters through A24 later this month.

To accompany the forthcoming film, Hill has compiled a Mid90s Spotify playlist, which is being billed as “the first-ever Official Motion Picture Playlist.” The playlist features tracks from an assortment of artists including Nirvana, GZA, The Pixies and A Tribe Called Quest, all of whom Hill says he listened to growing up, and to whose songs the film was written and shot.

Mid90s also features a score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the former also a ‘90s music staple through his work as the lead singer of Nine Inch Nails, but the new playlist suggests a new direction moving forward for movie soundtracks, at least in terms of how they’re distributed. Music fans who are now the same age as the teens in Mid90s are perhaps most familiar with getting their music via streaming through curated playlists, and it makes sense that they would get movie soundtracks the same way.

So far, both of the trailers for Mid90s have been set to Wendy Rene’s classic Stax recording “After Laughter (Comes Tears),” but this new playlist perhaps offers a better sample of the kind of tunes we should expect from Mid90s as it makes its way into theaters soon.

Mid90s opens in limited release on Oct. 19. Listen to the film’s Spotify playlist here and a 1998 A Tribe Called Quest performance from the Paste archives below.
