Following an intimate show on Oct. 2 at The Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles, St. Vincent has announced a new album, MassEducation, a rework of last year’s MASSEDUCTION, playing on the often-mispronounced title.
The re-worked arrangements were done with St. Vincent’s Annie Clark on vocals and Thomas Bartlett on piano over the course of two days during the recording of MASSEDUCTION. Clark’s “saddest album” thus far receives a stripped-down, vulnerable treatment in the new release, not necessarily giving the tracks a “laid-back” feel but instead vividly emphasizing their candor.
Clark announced the release with copies of a hand-written letter handed to attendees after they exited the Oct. 2 show. Paired with the announcement was the album’s lead single, a piano version of “Savior.”
“We neither rehearsed nor spoke about how to approach any song, but rather, played two to three live takes, picked the best one, and trusted in the feeling of the moment,” wrote Clark in the letter. “So here it is—two dear friends playing songs together with the kind of secret understanding one can only get through endless nights in New York City. Enjoy.”
You can read the rest of the letter below.
The album is scheduled for release on Oct. 12 on Loma Vista, with St. Vincent touring throughout the month in support. You can preorder MassEducation here.
