Amazon Announces The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season Two Premiere Date, Releases Trailer

Following last month’s host of Emmy wins, Amy Sherman-Palladino’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is just about ready for its highly anticipated return—and we now have a premiere date.

On Wednesday, Amazon announced that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will be back for its sophomore run on Dec. 5. Alongside the major news, the streaming giant also released a brand-new trailer for Mrs. Maisel’s second season, available below.

The second season opens one year after Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) was left by her husband, leading her to discover her knack for standup comedy. Still keeping her career concealed from her family and friends (except her ex, Joel—yikes), Midge spends her days working as a department store switchboard operator and her nights garnering laughs onstage.

All the fan favorites—think: Midge’s zany manager, Susie (Alex Borstein)—pop up in the trailer, confirming their returns for the second season. Other talent, including Tony Shalhoub, Michael Zegen, Luke Kirby, Kevin Pollak and Marin Hinkle, will also be back. So will Jane Lynch, who takes on the role of established comic Sophie Lennon.

What’s more, the official trailer offers a glimpse of Midge’s new love interest, portrayed by recurring guest star Zachary Levi, of Chuck fame (in which he played Chuck Bartowski).

The short clip also promises the continued exploration of institutional sexism in the world of the mid-century comedy club. And despite the show’s 1950s setting, Midge’s commentary is still relevant: “Men in general run around telling everyone only men are funny,” she remarks in the trailer. “Comedy is fueled by disappointment and humiliation. Now who the hell does that describe more than women?”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won the 2018 Golden Globe for comedy series, and Brosnahan won the 2018 Golden Globe for comedy actress. The show also took home eight Emmys this year, including comedy series, comedy actress, supporting comedy actress (for Borstein), and comedy writing and directing (both for Sherman-Palladino).

Amazon has already renewed the series for a third run. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season two will premiere Dec. 5 on Amazon Prime Video.
