Listen to Angelo de Augustine's New Song "Tomb," off His Forthcoming Album of the Same Name

Angelo De Augustine has released “Tomb,” the second single off his forthcoming album of the same name, out Jan. 18, 2019, through Asthmatic Kitty.

It’s tempting to find some real-life tragedy that would inform the plinking heartbreak of “Tomb.” De Augustine is from Thousand Oaks, the Los Angeles suburb that last week suffered through a mass shooting and now faces devastation from raging wildfires. The devastation of De Augustine’s hometown seems, for the moment, insurmountable, and a song like “Tomb” would perhaps feel gratuitous if it were siphoned from all of this.

But the song, along with the rest of Tomb, came out of a quieter, lonelier sort of pain. De Augustine wrote the album following a breakup in the winter of last year. The song came together quickly—in just 10 minutes, according to De Augustine—but that instant fossilization of a prolonged loneliness is felt deeply on “Tomb,” from the wintry keys to De Augustine’s thin, whispering falsetto.

“Sometimes you get lucky and a piece of music comes out of you all at once and appears to express all that you have longed to externalize from inside yourself,” he says in a statement. “This was one of those moments for me.” The song is, then, more universal for its interiority, more far-reaching for the limited world of hurt it occupies.

De Augustine will be touring the U.K. and Europe in February of next year following the release of Tomb.
