Sonic the Hedgehog, the widely beloved and famous blue hedgehog of the videogame world, is getting his own live-action movie in 2019. On Monday, fans were able to get the first look at the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie through its motion poster, shared via IGN.
You can see the motion poster below. When speaking to the movie’s creative team, IGN was told that “Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz, finds himself in our present-day world, wherein he develops a relationship with James Marsden’s Tom Wachowski and also finds himself at odds with Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik. As expected, mayhem ensues.”
And mayhem has certainly ensued on the internet. Following the first look’s release, social media erupted with all sorts of reactions.
One of the first things you notice is that Sonic has fur instead of quills, a decision that the creative team did not take lightly but knew from the beginning that they would make: “It would be weird and it would feel like he was running around nude if he was some sort of otter-like thing. It was always, for us, fur, and we never considered anything different. It’s part of what integrates him into the real world and makes him a real creature,” executive producer Tim Miller (Deadpool) told IGN.
Post-production on the Sonic movie, which was directed by Oscar nominee Jeff Fowler, began around a month ago. You can check out IGN’s interview for more details on how the team went about depicting Sonic’s character speed, eyes and more.
Sonic The Hedgehog will be released in theaters on Nov. 8, 2019 in the U.S, Nov. 28 in Australia and Dec. 26 in the U.K. See its strange, strange Sonic below.
