The Academy Announces 91st Oscars Shortlists

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its shortlists for the 91st Academy Awards in nine categories. This year’s selections include Lee Chang-dong’s acclaimed Burning, the first South Korean submission to advance to the Foreign Language Film shortlist, and Pixar’s short film Bao, now available to stream for free this week.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, a recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, has advanced in the Original Song category with “Suspirium,” the first song he released from his score for Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria. Should Yorke make the final nominations list in January, he’ll join the ranks of Radiohead bassist Jonny Greenwood, who was nominated last year in Best Original Score for his work on Phantom Thread.

Also of note is Marvel’s Black Panther, shortlisted in four categories: Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song) and Visual Effects. That’s likely just the beginning for the Ryan Coogler-directed superhero juggernaut, a legitimate Best Picture contender at this year’s Oscars.

Check out all nine shortlists below. Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019.
