Ezra Koenig joined the Christmas festivities late Tuesday with a live studio version of the Christmas standard “The Little Drummer Boy” that the Vampire Weekend singer shared on his Instagram page, featuring what would appear to be members of HAIM.

Koenig says in the caption that “The Little Drummer Boy” is a top three Christmas song for him: “Imagine that you come to see the messiah and he’s been given all sorts of regal gifts like frankincense and myrrh,” he writes. “All you have to give is … a drum solo. You only get one shot. Do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime.”

Check out the performance and Koenig’s poetic caption below, along with Vampire Weekend’s 2007 Daytrotter Session. While you’re at it, read up on everything we know about Vampire Weekend’s forthcoming new album here.

a late night jam session in honor of the prince of peace. “Little Drummer Boy” is a top 3 Christmas song imho. imagine that you come to see the messiah and he’s been given all sorts of regal gifts like frankincense and myrrh. All you have to give is…a drum solo. You only get one shot. Do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime. You wail on the snare for a solid 20 minutes. Paradiddles upon paradiddles. You collapse in exhaustion. Did he like it? It’s unclear…until he smiles. You killed it, drummer boy.
