After New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opened up about her struggle to financially maintain her apartments in D.C. and New York’s Bronx, conservative commentator Candace Owens tweeted criticism of the young representative’s fiscal-planning abilities.
During last year’s midterm elections, the Democratic representative said she had to wait until her congressional salary came into effect before she could afford an apartment in D.C.
In a somewhat delayed tweet from Owens, she expressed her disbelief that a young American like Ocasio-Cortez couldn’t balance dual rent between two of the nation’s most expensive housing markets:
In response to a tweet that mentions how statements like Owens’ perpetuate the toxic mentality that only the wealthy are in a position to lead, Ocasio-Cortez said that she struggles because it’s her second home. Ocasio-Cortez tweeted of her Republican critics, “But I understand how they can’t conceive of a life where people don’t casually maintain 2 homes.”
