New on Netflix: All the Movies and TV Coming in February

There’s no such thing as a quiet month on Netflix, the alpha streamer (and newly minted member of the MPAA), but February comes close, as the service’s influx of new additions is far less overwhelming than usual. That’s not to say, however, that there isn’t more than enough to look forward to next month—see what we mean below.

Netflix’s February film additions are the most noteworthy, with an exciting original film leading the way: Velvet Buzzsaw (Feb. 1), the latest feature from Oscar-nominated writer-director Dan Gilroy. The much-anticipated film—described by Netflix as “a satirical thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce”—reunites Gilroy with Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, with Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen and John Malkovich rounding out its cast. Arriving alongside Velvet Buzzsaw on the first of February are a handful of other noteworthy movies, including Steven Spielberg’s iconic horror-thriller Jaws (and its three, increasingly terrible sequels, Jaws 2, Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge), one of 2017’s best films in the Olivier Assayas-directed, Kristen Stewart-starring Personal Shopper, Stephen Daldry’s Oscar-nominated dance drama Billy Elliot, 1986 Molly Ringwald starrer Pretty in Pink, Jack Nicholson-led late-’90s Oscar winner As Good as It Gets, Hailee Steinfeld-starring high school dramedy The Edge of Seventeen, 2000s horror-franchise films Final Destination and Hostel, and raunchy teen comedy American Pie (plus follow-ups American Pie 2 and American Wedding), to name a few. Following later in the month are Joe Wright’s Jamie Foxx/Robert Downey Jr.-starring drama The Soloist (Feb. 6), the Steven Soderbergh-directed, Tarell Alvin McCraney-scripted, André Holland-starring NBA lockout drama High Flying Bird (Feb. 8), an unspecified adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women (the Oscar-nominated 1994 iteration would be our guess) (Feb. 11), uproarious Judd Apatow comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Feb. 16) and Netflix original bromantic dramedy Paddleton (Feb. 22), among others.

As for the television and comedy side of things, Netflix is adding its usual slew of new original shows and specials throughout next month, beginning with a new series on Feb. 1: Russian Doll, starring Natasha Lyonne of Orange Is the New Black as a young woman named Nadia who finds herself the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one “very hard, neverending night” in New York City. Lyonne co-created the Groundhog Day-esque dark comedy alongside Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) and Leslye Headland (Terriers). Next up on Feb. 5 is Right Here, Around the Corner, the debut Netflix stand-up special from comedian, screenwriter and Emmy-winning Everybody Loves Raymond actor Ray Romano—his first in 23 years. The special finds Romano performing two sets in one night, touching on subjects including “choosing friends, surviving marriage, and knowing the difference between being old and not being young.” Another addition of note in comedy arrives on Feb. 8: Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History, an hour-plus-long special in which Hart plays himself, walking viewers through various key contributions of lesser-known individuals from black history via what Netflix calls “educational reenactments.” That same date also sees the arrival of One Day at a Time season three, in which “Penelope studies to become a nurse practitioner, Elena and Syd grow closer, Alex gets punished, Lydia tackles a bucket list and Schneider falls in love,” per Netflix, and ReMastered: The Two Killings of Sam Cooke, a new long-form docuseries installment exploring the circumstances and controversy surrounding the shooting death of the influential black musician and civil rights advocate.

Elsewhere in TV and comedy, a new Netflix standout returns on Feb. 10, as Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj debuts Volume 2, with new episodes streaming every Sunday. The weekly political-comedy talk show has already made Last Week Tonight-level waves in its early going, at one point shedding light on racist language used in a U.S. Central Command training manual that prompted an apology from the organization, for instance. Ken Jeong (The Hangover) stand-up special You Complete Me, Ho debuts Feb. 14—the actor, comedian and former doctor’s debut Netflix special, You Complete Me, Ho, directed and executive produced by Jeong’s Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, finds Jeong looking back on how he went from a doctor to a Hollywood comedy household name and opening up about how his wife’s battle with breast cancer led to his breakout role in the Hangover franchise. Arriving on Feb. 15 are new seasons of two much-anticipated Netflix original series: season two of acclaimed animated-fantasy series The Dragon Prince, in which Rayla and the princes hurry toward Xadia with their precious cargo, though Claudia and Soren are close behind and determined to stop them, and the debut season of The Umbrella Academy, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s Eisner-winning comic of the same name. Last but not least is the latest (read: sixth) volume of acclaimed food series Chef’s Table, in which “a renowned Italian butcher, an Indian chef in London and two stars of Southern U.S. cuisine share their culinary journeys,” per Netflix—that debuts Feb. 22.

Don’t depart this page before finding out what’s leaving Netflix next month, either, lest you check your queue on Feb. 1 and are unpleasantly surprised. That date sees the departure of numerous must-see movies, including Children of Men, Clerks, Shaun of the Dead, The Big Lebowski and The Bourne Ultimatum, followed later in the month by lesser titles like Cabin Fever (Feb. 2), Sing (Feb. 3) and Piranha (Feb. 20). You’ve been warned.
