Daily Dose: FURY, "Vacation"

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Orange County hardcore five-piece FURY have shared the second single from their album Failed Entertainment, out on May 3 via Run For Cover Records. Failed Entertainment is their debut release for Run For Cover and it will serve as the follow-up to their 2016 debut LP Paramount.

The band’s fiery, existential new song grapples with free will and the inevitable passage of time as frontman Jeremy Stith’s seething musings hinge on both the depressing and witty (“Buried are the ones I’ve failed to entertain”). The song’s video is a collision between the hectic and the mundane as the band’s hefty riffs boil over and Stith’s deranged, mutant vocals emerge thirsty for more.

In the song, Stith references Harry Dean Stanton’s discussion of “predestination and each humans’ capabilities and their place in the world.” He explains, “It’s about how we will do what we do, and the outcomes will be what they will, and as much choice as we might have in the big scheme of things, the fact is just like earth, humans weren’t here at one point, then we were, and soon we won’t be anymore. Vacation is about grief and what comes along with it—the denial, anger and the bargaining in situations where you come up short. We can only hope for acceptance that we are nothing, and love is everything.”

Per a press release, Failed Entertainment is the band’s “take on the human experience, an attempt to describe every person’s life and how it interacts with others through unmatched highs, desperate lows and mundane middles.” The LP was recorded by Colin Knight and their own guitarist Madison Woodward at Paradise Records in Anaheim, Calif. They also worked with engineer Andrew Oswald at Secret Bathroom Studios, mixing engineer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden) and Parquet Courts’ Andrew Savage.

FURY kick off a short West Coast tour with Gorilla Biscuits this week, with additional North American tour dates to be announced soon.
