King of The Jicks and Pavement lead Stephen Malkmus just dropped “Come Get Me,” the third single from his forthcoming album Groove Denied. The indie-rock icon’s newest solo project will see a departure from the chilled-out guitar grooves of The Jicks, and a foray into the electronic world.
While the first single from Groove Denied, “Viktor Borgia,” went full-on LCD Soundsytem, Malkmus’ next drop, “Rushing the Acid Frat,” embraced an Olivia Tremor Control-esque kind of fuzzy-Beatles sensibility. “Come Get Me” tends much more toward the latter, with Malkmus’ vocals tin-canned over a flattened-out, guitar-filled groove—Malkmus himself describes it as “warped psych” in a statement.
The accompanying video for this new single is a virtual walkthrough of a Malkmus museum of portraits. The last two singles’ companion videos varied from Schoolhouse Rock-style acid trip to early CG-infused laser show. The jumbled-up assortment of sounds and visuals we’ve seen so far from Groove Denied are all over the place, leaving the final sound of the project very up in the air. We’ll have to wait until the album drops March 15 on Matador Records to get the whole picture.
