Daily Dose: Slow Pulp, "High"

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Wisconsin-born, Chicago-based band Slow Pulp have new music on the way, the soon-to-be-self-released Big Day EP, and though the four-track outing’s big day isn’t until May 15, the psych-rock quartet couldn’t resist releasing “High” just in time for April 20.

The first (and only) single from Slow Pulp’s new EP is structured so as to mimic the thought process one follows to reach its central realization: “I just think I’m too high.” Acoustic guitars and Emily Massey’s breathy vocals establish a baseline of ever-so-slight discomfort, trapping us in a moment where nothing feels quite right—”Oh, my shirt sits on my body / like it’s not for me / and now I’m trying to find my way out / I wish I knew how,” she laments, moments before a wave of electric guitar crashes into the mix, a caustic herald of that singular strain of internal panic’s onset. With “High,” Slow Pulp deliver a fuzzed-out 4/20 anthem anyone who’s felt ill-at-ease in their own body or mind can connect with.

Slow Pulp—Massey (guitar/vocals), Henry Stoehr (guitar), Alex Leeds (bass) and Teddy Mathews (drums)—kick off their upcoming North American tour in support of their Big Day EP with a hometown show in Madison, Wis., on May 30. They’ll be all over the map through June and into early July, so check for a show near you down below.
