Hannah Gadsby's New Special Douglas Is Headed to Netflix

Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby announced at a FYSEE event in Los Angeles Monday that her new special Douglas is set to launch on Netflix in 2020.

The hour-long special, named after Gadsby’s dog, will be released after her current stand-up tour of the U.S. concludes on July 12 after it took off at a sold-out premiere in Australia.

“I’m really enjoying touring with the live performance, but there will be places in the world that I won’t be able to visit,” Gadsby said in a statement. “So it’s wonderful that Netflix will bring the show to every corner of the globe.”

The announcement of her Douglas tour came as a change of course after Gadsby discussed in interviews the possibility of quitting comedy and returning to her native Tasmania after the breakout success of her first Netflix special Nanette.

Gadsby’s Nanette was released on Netflix in 2018 after she toured the stand-up routine at sold-out venues across Australia and the U.K. It was launched on Netflix as the first Australian Netflix Original Comedy Special and ran on tour for 18 months, winning prizes from comedy festivals in Melbourne and Edinburgh. Paste named Nanette the best comedy special of 2018, as contributor Graham Techler called it “an extremely angry hour, an extremely cathartic one and an extremely necessary one.”

Gadsby originally rose to prominence in the comedy world after winning the 2006 national finals of the Raw Comedy competition, an annual Australian contest for emerging comedians at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. She also played the character Hannah on the Australian comedy-drama TV series Please Like Me and has hosted three art documentaries. She also has a book in the works, to be published by Ballantine in North America, and Allen and Unwin in Australia and the U.K.
