The Lonely Island Are Back with a Mysterious New Netflix Project

Premiering on Netflix tonight at midnight, comedy trio The Lonely Island are back with, well, something.

Teasing the new project on their Twitter, a six-second video clip leaves just about everything to the audience’s imagination. Billed it as a “visual poem,” the group’s new project will likely include the absurd rapping Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are so well-known for. Given that the project is premiering on Netflix, one can’t help but wonder if the trio are diving into a television series or feature film, or if this is more of a one-off comedy special sort of deal.

Recently, Samberg has been making waves on NBC’s beloved Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while Schaffer and Taccone have been venturing into their own projects. Recent projects from the trio have included the song “Super Cool,” a collaboration with Beck and Robyn that was featured on the soundtrack for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. Prior to that, the group released “Why Not Me?” in 2018, a song they claimed was rejected from that year’s Oscars. (The trio also produced I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, which is basically the best show on TV, probably ever, so we felt the need to mention that.-Ed.)

The Lonely Island  have their first-ever tour scheduled for this June, including a set at Bonnaroo, as well as shows in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York, Boston and more.

Though there’s little to no information on the “visual poem,” it can be assumed with The Lonely Island behind the project, it’ll bring bundles of laughter.
