Hear Black Lips Tear Through a Short But Fierce Set on This Day in 2009

Atlanta garage/punk fusers Black Lips have always enjoyed causing a ruckus.

Their live shows are upheavals, their studio records speaker-shakers and their interviews goofy. These live recordings from this day (June 11) in 2009, captured for a Daytrotter session in Austin, Texas, feel much the same. Fresh off the release of their fifth studio album, 200 Million Thousand, the band barreled in our studio for a characteristically loud and loose set. They played the first two tunes from that record (“Take My Heart” and “Drugs”), plus a cover of The Weeds’ (aka The Lollipop Shoppe) 1968 garage rock jam “You Must Be a Witch.”

The band’s most recent album was 2017’s Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?, which was produced by Sean Lennon and followed 2014’s Underneath the Rainbow. There’s no word on any forthcoming new music from the group, but they do have several European tour dates coming up this summer, following a May appearance at Atlanta’s own Shaky Knees festival.
