Uh, Okay: Another Black Christmas Remake Is In the Works

Huzzah! The world will receive another remake of the beloved cult slasher film Black Christmas just in time for … you guessed it, Christmas.

Imogen Poots is set to star in the Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions project based off of the 1974 Canadian thriller. Director Sophia Takal will spearhead the project from a script she penned with April Wolfe, which coincidentally marks the first time a Blumhouse production has recruited a female director for a theatrical feature film (yeah—that long).

Remade in 2006 to absolutely zero acclaim (sorry, Weinstein), Black Christmas follows a group of sorority sisters who are stalked and bludgeoned to death in their house several days before Christmas. Controversy over the film’s Christmas Day release date and internal turmoil over its final ending largely ruined the remake’s reception at the box office, which was violently negative at best.

Seeing that Universal and Blumhouse’s Halloween reimagining experienced a huge box office success in 2018, it may be safe to say that their joint take on the cult film will fare well. It’ll be pretty damn hard to top this, though.

The film is set to release on Dec. 13 with newcomers Lily Donoghue, Caleb Eberhardt, Brittany O’Grady and Aleyse Shannon also attached to star. Stay tuned for further updates on the production.

Any guesses on who Poots will be portraying? Seeing that she’s 10 years removed from an undergraduate, we think she’s returning as a Ph.D. candidate.

Maybe you’ll find the answer in our 2014 chat with the actress.
