There’s been many Batman sequels, prequels and spinoffs, but none of them have really focused all that much on Alfred Pennyworth, the Wayne family’s butler.
In Epix’s forthcoming show Pennyworth, viewers get an insight into the background of the butler, who’s also an ex-Special Air Serviceman. Set in 1960s London, the show follows Pennyworth in his 20s as he forms his own security service and subsequently gets a job offer from Thomas Wayne. Due to this, Pennyworth gets some bad guys, or shall we say a bad woman, on his tail.
Between switchblades, criminal conspiracies and a rendezvous or two with a beautiful dancer, the beloved character seems to get his chance to be the hero in the sultry, action-packed-seeming series.
Previously played by Michael Caine, Jeremy Irons and Michael Gough, Alfred is played here by The Imitation Game’s Jack Bannon, while Ben Aldridge will portray Thomas Wayne. Also among the series’ cast are Paloma Faith, Emma Corrin and Ryan Fletcher. The show, which premieres June 28, comes from the creators of Fox’s Gotham, with Bruno Heller and Danny Cameron producing the limited series.
