Steve Gunn Releases Two New Songs, Shares Extensive Tour Dates

Just a few months after January’s The Unseen In Between, Steve Gunn has shared two new tracks pulled from that album’s studio sessions this Tuesday morning. The tracks come with a handful of new tour dates in tow, including some solo sets opening for Dinosaur Jr.

“Be Still Moon” showcases Gunn’s virtuoso fingerpicking. The track is breezy and effortless, a waltz that briskly swings with layers of steel guitar and acoustic bass. Gunn sings of chance encounters in a hotel; “A man on the run / Two on vacation / and then there’s you,” he croons just before the song’s whimsical bridge.

“Shrunken Heads,” meanwhile, is a touch more laid-back, leaning into Gunn’s psychedelic inclinations. With multiple guitars, Gunn sets a call-and-response between the grounded and the dreamy that blooms into something transportive. His free-associative lyrics meditate on connection and communication, with musings like “Call me when your dead / Feel it in your hand / Words are made of sand” peppered throughout the track.

The songs are well-suited for one another, effectively highlighting Gunn’s particular style of psych-folk songwriting. As we noted in our recent profile of the artist, “Be Still Moon” and “Shrunken Heads” emphasize Gunn’s ability to be both a “therapeutic poet and perplexing musician.”

Listen to “Be Still Moon” and “Shrunken Heads” here, then check to see if Gunn is playing a show near you while you revisit his 2014 stop at Daytrotter below.
