New on Netflix: All the Movies and TV Coming in August

We’re a little mad at Netflix right now, considering their recent cancellation of one Tuca & Bertie, but we’re nothing if not professionals, so we’re going to go ahead and tell you about all the film and television headed to the streamer’s ever-shifting library in August anyway.

On the film front, one of Netflix’s most exciting additions is an underrated entry in the filmography of an American master: Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-nominated Jackie Brown (Aug. 1), starring Pam Grier as the title character, a stewardess who finds herself caught between gunrunner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson) and the police on his trail, and must play both sides to navigate the dangerous situation and make a bundle in the process. The sprawling ensemble crime-drama, which also stars Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda, Robert Forster, Michael Keaton and Chris Tucker, shares DNA with Tarantino’s latest, the just-released and already-acclaimed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Arriving alongside Jackie Brown on Aug. 1 are worthwhile films including the Rocky franchise’s first five entries, classic Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day, Oscar-nominated rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral, Jodie Foster-starring David Fincher thriller Panic Room and the Wachowski siblings’ divisive sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending. Films following later in the month, meanwhile, include star-studded Netflix original empty-nester comedy Otherhood (Aug. 2), Ryan Reynolds- and Ben Kingsley-led sci-fi flop Selfless (Aug. 16), 2004’s Thomas Jane-starring attempt at The Punisher and Martin Scorsese’s period epic Gangs of New York (Aug. 20).

Just as solid, if not more so, than Netflix’s incoming movie slate is its TV counterpart, which features a number of returning favorites, as well as a few exciting new additions. We’ll keep it chronological for ease’s sake, beginning with Dear White People: Volume 3 (Aug. 2). In its third season, Justin Simien’s series adaptation of his 2014 film of the same name, which we declared TV’s shade champ last year, finds the students of Winchester embracing new creative challenges and romantic possibilities; meanwhile, a charismatic professor shakes up life on campus. Arriving two days later is Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj: Volume 4 (Aug. 4), the Peabody Award-winning comedy series in which the former Daily Show correspondent goes deep on various current events, much like a millennial John Oliver. The new comedy special from distinctive stand-up Sebastian Maniscalco, Sebastian Maniscalco: Why Would You Do That (Aug. 6), streams soon after, the follow-up to his debut Netflix special, January’s Stay Hungry. The much-anticipated third season of Emmy-winning women’s wrestling dramedy GLOW arrives the same day as Nickelodeon cartoon throwback special Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling (Aug. 9), followed soon after by the debut of Tiffany Haddish-curated comedy special Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready (Aug. 13), another Nicktoon blast from the past in the form of Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus (Aug. 16) and the dark-horse pick for August’s most exciting TV addition of all: the mysterious second season of serial killer psychodrama Mindhunter (Aug. 16), in which the Behavioral Science Unit’s killer instincts move from theory into action when the FBI joins in a high-profile hunt for a serial child murderer. And last but miles from least is The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Aug. 30), Netflix’s beyond-star-studded series adaptation of Jim Henson’s 1982 fantasy film.

Not to end on a negative note, but Netflix is losing a number of exceptional films—also, The Emoji Movie—in August. Poltergeist, The Master, Good Will Hunting, The Fifth Element, Hot Fuzz and Zombieland are among the movies vanishing on Aug. 1, followed by The Founder (Aug. 2), Zodiac (Aug. 6), No Country for Old Men (Aug. 11), The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Aug. 16), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Aug. 20) and Wind River (Aug. 28), so if any of those titles are on your to-watch list, you’d better hop to in the time allotted.
